Doctor Who: Worst companion exit of the reboot

Category: Rant,TVBill Mason @ 11:01 pm

(Yes, there are about to be spoilers.)

Worst companion exit of the reboot era. In my opinion. Because:

  • Rose: Helps save the world from Dalek and Cybermen invasion.
  • Martha: Helps save the world from the Master.
  • Donna: Helps save the universe from the Daleks.

The Ponds? They save…New York City? OK, we can give them the world, even. Save the world from the Weeping Angels. Except, oh, one Angel survives in a reverse deus ex machina that is blatantly there for no reason except the Ponds are scheduled to depart, so they can’t win this one.

And then it’s an all off-screen ‘well you suppose they led a happy life but you’ll never know and now they’re dead’ ending. At least Rose had a (melo?)dramatic climactic moment, and consolation ending with family and pseudo-10th-Doctor. Martha’s exit had the most logical motivation of them all, and we saw her again. We know she’s good. Donna’s was my least favorite departure. But the 10th Doctor at least sort of patched it up to a happy-ish ending for her.

But the Ponds? Meh. I was sad. The fall season was disappointing.

Sweet Chipotle Vegetable Relish

Category: RecipeBill Mason @ 8:28 pm

I need this recipe somewhere so I have it tomorrow. So here it is.

Yields: 1 quart

  • 1 pound carrots, peeled and sliced ½ inch thick on diagonal
  • 1 pound zucchini, sliced ½ inch thick on diagonal
  • 1 cup tomato juice
  • 1 T pureed chipotle en adobo (canned)
  • ¼ C brown sugar
  • 1/3 C apple cider vinegar
  • 2 T balsamic vinegar
  • 2 T olive oil
  • 1 t salt
  • 1 red bell pepper, deribbed and minced
  • 1 red onion, minced
  • Minced cilantro for garnish

Steam carrots and zucchini for 4 minutes. Immediately drop into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. Drain and place in a bowl. Combine tomato juice, chipotle, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and salt in a saucepan. Simmer 10 minutes. Cool until just warm, then pour over carrots and zucchini. Add minced bell pepper and onion. Let marinate several hours. To serve as marinated vegetables, lift vegetables out with slotted spoon, or for a more flavorful version, serve with extra marinade poured over the vegetables. Sprinkle with minced cilantro.

For us, we skip the onion and cilantro.
